Why is my washer shaking so violently during spin?
A washing machine that shakes, bangs, or walks across the floor during the spin cycle is one of the most alarming appliance problems — and one of the most common. If your washer is vibrating loudly or moving out of position, something is wrong with how the drum is being stabilized during high-speed spinning.
The good news: most violent shaking is caused by a worn mechanical part or an installation issue, not a failed motor or control board. Here are all the causes, in order of how often we see them.
Why does a washer shake violently? 6 real causes
1. Worn shock absorbers or suspension rods (most common) — shock absorbers on front-load washers and suspension rods on top-load washers are designed to cushion the drum during spin. When they wear out, the drum becomes uncontrolled at high speed and vibrates severely. This is the cause in the majority of violent shaking cases we diagnose.
2. Washer not level — even a slight tilt causes the drum's weight to shift unevenly during spin, creating vibration that gets worse as speed increases. This is especially common after a move or floor renovation. Easy to fix with the adjustable feet on the machine.
3. Unbalanced laundry load — washing one heavy item (a single comforter, a pair of jeans, one towel) creates extreme weight imbalance in the drum. The washer senses this and may attempt multiple rebalancing cycles. If it still can't balance, it spins at reduced speed or stops.
4. Worn drum bearings — if you hear a deep grinding or rumbling sound in addition to shaking, the drum bearings may be failing. This is a more serious repair but completely fixable. Ignoring failing bearings long-term can damage the drum shaft.
5. Shipping bolts not removed (new washers only) — front-load washers ship with metal bolts securing the drum to prevent transport damage. If these aren't removed during installation, the washer will shake violently from the first load. Check your installation manual.
6. Loose or broken counterweight — washers have concrete counterweights bolted to the drum assembly to stabilize high-speed spin. If the bolts loosen or the weight cracks, the drum becomes unstable. You may hear a heavy clunking sound in addition to shaking.
What can you check at home?
- Place a level on top of the washer — adjust the feet until it reads perfectly level front-to-back and side-to-side
- Check that loads are balanced — mix large and small items, never wash one large item alone
- On a new washer, check the back for shipping bolts (usually 3–4 plastic-capped bolts)
- Try running a small balanced load — if the shaking stops, the issue is load distribution
- If the shaking continues with a balanced load on a level machine, the shock absorbers have likely failed
Real repair case: washer shaking violently in Riverside, CA
A homeowner in Riverside contacted us because their front-load washing machine was shaking so violently during spin that it was moving away from the wall. The noise was loud enough to be heard from another room.
Our technician Dennis inspected the machine and found two issues working together: the rear suspension rods were worn and couldn't stabilize the drum at spin speeds, and the washer was installed on a slightly uneven tile floor — which amplified the vibration from the worn suspension.
Dennis replaced both suspension rods with OEM parts and adjusted the feet to achieve perfect level. Multiple spin cycles at full speed confirmed the fix — no shaking, no noise, no movement.
Is a shaking washer dangerous?
It can be. A washer that moves across the floor can pull on water supply hoses and drain hoses until they disconnect, causing flooding. A machine with failed drum bearings, if left unrepaired, can eventually damage the drum shaft to the point where the repair becomes much more expensive. Address shaking early.
