Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator leaking water inside?
Water pooling inside your Sub-Zero refrigerator — under the crisper drawers, on shelves, or at the bottom of the fridge compartment — is a common problem that's almost always caused by a blocked defrost drain. It looks alarming but is very fixable.
Why does a Sub-Zero refrigerator leak water inside? 4 causes
1. Clogged or frozen defrost drain (most common) — during the defrost cycle, condensation melts off the evaporator coils and flows down a drain tube to the drip pan below the fridge. When this drain tube gets clogged with food debris or ice, water backs up and drips into the fridge compartment instead. This is the cause in the vast majority of Sub-Zero internal leak cases.
2. Cracked or disconnected drain tube — the plastic drain tube can crack with age or disconnect from its fitting. Water that should flow to the drip pan instead drips directly into the cabinet interior.
3. Blocked drain pan — if the drain pan under the refrigerator is full or mispositioned, it can overflow back into the unit. Less common, but worth checking during diagnosis.
4. Ice maker water line leak — if the internal water leak is near the ice maker compartment, a cracked water line or loose fitting may be the source rather than the defrost system. This is usually identifiable by the location of the water — near the ice maker rather than under the crisper drawers.
What can you check yourself?
- Look for water specifically under the crisper drawers — this almost always means a clogged defrost drain.
- Check if there's frost or ice buildup at the back wall of the fridge compartment — this confirms a defrost drain issue.
- Empty the crisper drawers and look for the drain hole at the very back of the compartment floor — you can try flushing it carefully with warm water using a turkey baster.
- If water appears near the ice maker, check the water line connection at the back of the fridge.
If flushing the drain doesn't resolve it, or if the drain is frozen solid, a technician needs to clear it properly and check the drain tube for cracks.
Real repair case: Sub-Zero leaking inside in Riverside, CA
A homeowner in Riverside noticed water pooling repeatedly under the crisper drawers of their Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator. The fridge was cooling normally — the leak was the only symptom.
Our technician Oleg found a completely blocked defrost drain tube packed with food debris and a plug of ice at the drain opening. Water from the defrost cycle had nowhere to go and was backing up into the fridge compartment.
Oleg cleared the drain tube, flushed it with warm water, and verified the drain pan below was properly positioned. He also inspected the drain tube for cracks and found none. The repair was completed in under an hour and the leak hasn't returned.
Can a leaking Sub-Zero damage the cabinet?
Yes. Sub-Zero built-in refrigerators are typically surrounded by custom cabinetry. A persistent internal water leak can seep into the cabinet panels, cause warping, and eventually lead to mold. If you've noticed water for more than a few days, check the cabinet floor panel around the fridge for moisture or discoloration.
