Why won't my gas cooktop burner light?
A gas cooktop burner that clicks but won't light — or won't stay lit — is one of the most common kitchen appliance calls we handle. The clicking sound tells you the igniter is working. The fact that the burner won't light tells you something else is wrong.
Here are the real causes, in order of frequency, and what our technician found on a recent Riverside service call.
Why is my gas cooktop not lighting? 5 causes
1. Dirty or misaligned burner cap (most common) — the burner cap sits on top of the burner head and distributes gas evenly to the igniter spark. If it's clogged with food debris or shifted out of position, gas can't flow correctly to the igniter location and the burner won't light reliably. After cleaning the stove, the cap sometimes gets replaced slightly off-center — which is enough to cause ignition failure.
2. Wet or dirty igniter — the igniter is a ceramic electrode that produces the spark. If moisture from a spill gets into the igniter, it will click rapidly but not produce a strong enough spark to ignite gas. You may hear continuous clicking even when you're not turning a knob — this is classic moisture in the igniter. It often resolves after the igniter dries out, but persistent clicking usually means the igniter needs replacement.
3. Clogged burner ports — the small holes around the burner head can get packed with food residue, grease, and carbonized spills. When ports are clogged, gas can't flow evenly and the burner lights unevenly, weakly, or not at all. This is especially common on burners that see heavy use.
4. Failed igniter module or switch — the igniter module sends electrical current to the igniter electrodes. When the module fails, one or all burners stop sparking. The burner knob clicks but you see no spark at the burner. If multiple burners have stopped sparking simultaneously, the module is the likely cause.
5. Gas supply issue — if all burners fail at the same time and you can smell gas but get no ignition, check that the gas supply valve behind the cooktop is fully open. Also check whether other gas appliances in your home are working normally. A gas supply pressure issue affects all burners equally.
What can you check at home?
- Remove the burner grate and burner cap. Clean the cap thoroughly and make sure the ports around the burner head are clear — use a toothpick or thin wire, not a toothpick that can break off.
- Dry the igniter area with a paper towel if there's been a recent spill. Allow it to air dry for 30 minutes before testing.
- Reinstall the burner cap and make sure it seats flat and centered on the burner head.
- Test whether all burners are affected or just one — if all fail at once, it's the igniter module or gas supply. If just one, it's the cap, ports, or individual igniter.
Safety note: if you smell gas strongly and cannot light any burner, do not attempt to use the cooktop. Turn off the gas supply valve, ventilate the kitchen, and call a technician.
Real repair case: KitchenAid gas cooktop not lighting in Riverside, CA
A homeowner in Riverside called us after their KitchenAid gas cooktop started clicking but wouldn't light on the front-left burner. They could smell gas and hear clicking, but no flame appeared.
Our technician found two issues: the burner cap on that burner was slightly off-center after a recent cleaning, and the igniter tip was coated with carbonized residue from a boilover. The combination meant gas wasn't reaching the igniter location in sufficient concentration, and the igniter spark wasn't strong enough to jump through the residue.
After cleaning the igniter, repositioning the burner cap correctly, and clearing the burner ports, the burner lit immediately on the first attempt. No parts were needed. Total visit time: 45 minutes including a full inspection of all other burners.
When should you call a technician vs. DIY?
Try cleaning the burner cap and ports first — this resolves most intermittent ignition issues at no cost. Call a technician if: the igniter clicks constantly without you turning a knob (moisture inside the igniter assembly), if there's no spark visible at the burner (igniter or module failure), or if you smell gas but can't get any burner to light (gas supply or valve issue).
