What is the LG linear compressor and why does it fail?
LG introduced the linear compressor in their French-door and bottom-freezer refrigerators starting around 2014. Unlike a traditional reciprocating compressor, the linear compressor moves in a straight back-and-forth motion rather than rotating. LG marketed this as a more efficient, quieter design — and promoted a 10-year warranty as proof of their confidence in it.
The problem: a significant number of linear compressors began failing well before the 10-year mark — some within 3 to 5 years of purchase. When the compressor fails, the refrigerator loses its ability to cool. Food spoils. And then owners discover that the 10-year warranty doesn't cover what they thought it covered.
Signs of LG linear compressor failure
These are the symptoms we diagnose most frequently on LG service calls in Riverside and the Inland Empire:
Fridge warm, freezer barely cold — the most common presentation. The compressor is unable to circulate refrigerant effectively, so cooling degrades progressively.
Clicking or buzzing from the back of the fridge — the compressor attempts to start, fails, and the start relay clicks off. This cycle repeats every few minutes. You may hear a click followed by 30–60 seconds of silence, then another click.
Compressor not running at all — the fridge is silent. Fans may still run, but the compressor has stopped entirely.
Compressor extremely hot to the touch — a compressor that overheats and shuts itself off via thermal protection, then cools and restarts, indicates it's failing under load.
Frost pattern abnormal or absent in freezer — when the sealed system can't build enough pressure, the evaporator coils don't frost evenly, and the fridge can't maintain temperature.
What LG's 10-year warranty actually covers — and what it doesn't
This is the source of the most confusion and frustration among LG refrigerator owners. Here is the accurate breakdown:
Covered: the linear compressor part itself — LG will replace the compressor component under the 10-year warranty on qualifying models.
Not covered: labor — and this is where owners get blindsided. Labor for a linear compressor replacement in a French-door refrigerator runs $350–600 depending on the complexity. LG's warranty does not include this cost after the first year of ownership.
Not covered: refrigerant — replacing a compressor typically requires evacuating and recharging the refrigerant. This alone can add $150–250 to the repair bill.
Not covered: other sealed system components — if the condenser, evaporator, or line sets are also damaged, those parts and labor fall outside the warranty.
Not covered: consequential losses — food spoilage, property damage from water, or secondary appliance failures are not included.
The net result: a compressor failure on an LG refrigerator that is 4 years old might have a free part under warranty, but the total repair bill including labor and refrigerant can still reach $500–800 out of pocket.
Which LG models are most affected
The linear compressor failure issue is concentrated in LG French-door refrigerators produced approximately between 2014 and 2019. The most frequently reported model series include LRMVS, LRFXS, LRFDS, and LFX prefix models. Bottom-freezer models on the same platform share similar risk. LG's top-freezer models use a different compressor design and have significantly lower failure rates.
Repair vs replace: the math for LG compressor failure
Whether LG compressor repair is worth it depends primarily on the age of the refrigerator and your total out-of-pocket cost. For the general framework we use to make this call on any refrigerator brand, see our guide on whether refrigerator repair is worth it.
Under 7 years old with warranty part coverage — if LG covers the compressor part and your total out-of-pocket is $400–600 for labor and refrigerant, repair is almost always worth it. A comparable replacement refrigerator costs $1,400–2,500.
7 to 10 years old, compressor failed once before — evaluate carefully. A previously repaired compressor on an older unit suggests the underlying sealed system may have ongoing issues.
Over 10 years old, out of warranty — total repair cost including part, labor, and refrigerant may approach $800–1,000. At that point, a new refrigerator from a more reliable brand may be the better investment.
How to file an LG warranty claim for compressor failure
Step 1: Locate your model and serial number (inside the fridge door frame). Step 2: Call LG at 1-800-243-0000 and report the cooling failure. Step 3: Ask specifically whether your model is covered under the 10-year linear compressor warranty. Step 4: Request that LG authorize the compressor part — get this in writing if possible. Step 5: Understand that LG may send an authorized service provider, or you may be able to use an independent tech and get partial reimbursement for the part.
From a recent call: LG compressor repair in Corona
A homeowner in Corona called us when their 2017 LG LRMVS3006S French-door refrigerator stopped cooling. The freezer was barely cold, the fridge section was at room temperature, and the compressor was clicking on and off every few minutes.
Andrew diagnosed a failed linear compressor on the same visit. Because the unit was within the 10-year warranty window, he walked the homeowner through the LG authorization process, confirmed the part was covered, and completed the replacement, including a refrigerant recharge, within two days.
Total out-of-pocket was $520 for labor and refrigerant. A new equivalent LG refrigerator was listed at $2,100. Repair was the clear right call.
