Why did my Samsung refrigerator stop making ice in Corona?
If your Samsung refrigerator's freezer is cold but the ice maker tray is dry and no ice is being produced, you're not alone. Samsung ice maker problems are among the most common service calls we handle in Corona and across Riverside County.
Here are the most common causes, what our technician found on this Corona service call, and what to check yourself.
Why does a Samsung ice maker stop working? 6 causes
1. Frozen water fill tube (most common on Samsung) — the small tube that delivers water to the ice maker tray freezes solid in Samsung refrigerators more often than any other brand. When it's frozen, no water reaches the ice mold and production stops completely. The freezer continues operating normally — only ice production is affected.
2. Defective water inlet valve — the inlet valve controls water flow from your home supply to the ice maker. A failing valve solenoid won't open fully under normal water pressure, restricting or stopping water delivery. You may notice the water dispenser still works — that's a different valve solenoid on the same assembly.
3. Ice maker assembly failure — the ice maker module controls the harvest cycle — filling, freezing, and ejecting ice. When the module fails, production stops at a specific point in the cycle. You may find the tray filled with water that won't freeze, or completely empty.
4. Freezer temperature too warm — Samsung ice makers require the freezer to maintain 0–10°F. If the freezer temperature has crept above this range — from a door seal problem, condenser issue, or defrost fault — ice won't form properly.
5. Ice maker switched off or arm in up position — a simple one worth checking first. On Samsung models, the ice maker can be accidentally switched off via the control panel or the ice maker arm can get knocked into the off position, stopping all production.
6. Clogged water filter — Samsung recommends replacing the water filter every 6 months. A clogged filter reduces water pressure below the threshold the inlet valve needs to open, slowing or stopping ice production. If the filter indicator is on, replace it first before troubleshooting further.
What can you check at home?
- Verify the ice maker is switched on — check the control panel for an ice maker off indicator
- Check the ice maker arm position — it should be in the down position to allow production
- Replace the water filter if it's been more than 6 months or the indicator is on
- Verify freezer temperature is at or below 0°F
- Press the ice maker test button (usually on the side of the ice maker module) — you should hear water filling within a few seconds
Real repair case: Samsung refrigerator not making ice in Corona, CA
A family in Corona contacted our appliance repair team after their Samsung French door refrigerator stopped producing ice completely. The freezer was cold, the water dispenser was working normally, and the ice maker was switched on. They had already replaced the water filter.
Our technician arrived the same day. Testing confirmed the fill tube was frozen solid — blocking all water from reaching the ice mold. After defrosting the fill tube, he also tested the water inlet valve and found the ice maker solenoid was weak, not opening reliably under normal water pressure.
Both issues were resolved in the same visit — the fill tube was defrosted and insulated to reduce refreezing risk, and the inlet valve was replaced. Ice production resumed within 90 minutes of the repair.
Is Samsung ice maker failure common?
Yes. Samsung ice makers have a known history of fill tube freezing issues across multiple model generations. If you've had this problem once, it's likely to recur unless the root cause (usually a defrost or airflow issue keeping that area too cold) is also addressed. Our technician will check for contributing factors beyond the immediate symptom.
