What does the Bosch dishwasher E24 error code mean?
The E24 error code on a Bosch dishwasher means the machine cannot drain water properly. If you see E24, your dishwasher has detected that water is not leaving the tub at the end of a cycle — and it stops to prevent overflow or pump damage.
This is one of the most searched Bosch dishwasher error codes, and the good news is that E24 is almost always fixable. In most cases it's a blockage, not a failed part.
What causes the Bosch dishwasher E24 error?
There are five main causes, roughly in order of how often we see them:
- Clogged drain filter — food debris, grease, and mineral buildup block the filter at the bottom of the tub, restricting water flow to the pump
- Blocked or kinked drain hose — the hose that carries water out to your sink drain can kink behind the machine or get blocked by food particles
- Garbage disposal connection — if the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, a blocked knockout plug or clogged disposal can trigger E24
- Foreign object in drain pump — glass fragments, fruit pits, or small bones can jam the pump impeller and prevent it from spinning
- Failed drain pump motor — less common, but the pump motor itself can burn out, especially on older Bosch units
What can you check yourself before calling a technician?
Before scheduling a repair, try these steps in order:
- Remove the bottom rack and take out the filter — twist it counterclockwise and lift it out. Rinse it under running water and scrub with a soft brush.
- Check the drain hose behind the dishwasher for kinks or sharp bends. If you recently moved the machine, this is a common cause.
- If your dishwasher connects to a garbage disposal, run the disposal to clear any blockage, then restart the dishwasher.
- Reset the machine by holding the Start button for 3–5 seconds, then running a short rinse cycle.
If E24 comes back after these steps, the issue is internal — either a jammed pump impeller or a failed pump motor — and requires a technician.
Real repair case: Bosch dishwasher E24 error in Ontario, CA
A homeowner in Ontario contacted us after their Bosch dishwasher repeatedly displayed the E24 code. The unit would complete the wash cycle but leave standing water at the bottom of the tub. They had already cleaned the filter without success.
Our technician arrived the same day and ran a full diagnostic. He found glass debris — from a broken wine glass — lodged inside the drain pump housing, jamming the impeller. The drain hose also had a partial restriction where it connected to the sink drain.
The fix: debris removed from the pump housing, hose connection cleared and repositioned, full test cycle run. The dishwasher drained completely and the E24 error has not returned.
Total repair time: under one hour.
Can you ignore the E24 error code?
No. If you leave a drainage problem unaddressed, a few things can happen: the standing water creates odors and mold, the pump motor strains against the blockage and eventually burns out, and in some cases the control board can be damaged by electrical faults caused by the pump overworking. A simple blockage that costs $100–$150 to fix can turn into a $400+ repair if ignored.
Other Bosch dishwasher error codes we fix
The E24 is the most common, but we regularly repair Bosch dishwashers showing E15 (water leakage sensor triggered), E09 (heating element failure), E01 and E02 (control board faults). If your Bosch is showing any error code and stopping mid-cycle, the diagnostic process is the same — we identify the fault, explain your options, and fix it in one visit.
We also handle dishwashers that run but don't clean properly and dishwashers leaking from the bottom — often these problems are related to the same drainage system.
When should you call a technician for E24?
Call us if the error returns after you've cleaned the filter and checked the drain hose. At that point the blockage is inside the pump or the pump motor has failed — both require opening the machine.
We provide same-day dishwasher repair across Ontario, Riverside, Eastvale, Corona, Chino, and Chino Hills. Our technician will diagnose the exact cause of your E24 error and fix it in one visit.
