Why is my refrigerator freezing food?
When your refrigerator starts freezing everything — especially items near the back wall — the problem is almost never the temperature setting. It's almost always an airflow or control issue that's sending too much cold air into the fridge compartment.
This is a fixable problem, and in most cases it doesn't require expensive parts. Here are all the causes we find, in order of frequency.
Why is my fridge freezing food? 5 real causes
1. Stuck or failed damper control (most common) — the damper is a small door that controls how much cold air flows from the freezer into the refrigerator section. When it gets stuck in the open position, cold air floods the fridge continuously and freezes everything. You'll notice the problem is worst near the top of the fridge where the cold air enters.
2. Temperature set too low — the refrigerator section should be set between 35–38°F. If someone accidentally adjusted the dial or the display is showing Celsius instead of Fahrenheit, the fridge may be running much colder than intended. Check this first — it's the easiest fix.
3. Faulty thermostat or temperature sensor — if the thermostat or thermistor gives incorrect readings, it tells the compressor to keep running even when the fridge is already cold enough. The compressor overcools the fridge section and food freezes.
4. Dirty or blocked condenser coils — when condenser coils are clogged with dust, the refrigerator loses its ability to regulate temperature properly. The system can swing between overcooling and undercooling as it struggles to maintain stability.
5. Overpacking the fridge — blocking the air vents inside the fridge with food containers stops air from circulating properly. Cold air builds up near the vents and freezes whatever is closest. Make sure vents on the back wall of the fridge are clear.
Which foods freeze first — and what that tells you
- Items at the back of the fridge freeze first — stuck damper or blocked vent. Cold air enters near the back.
- Everything freezes evenly — thermostat or temperature setting issue. The whole compartment is too cold.
- Top shelf items freeze, bottom shelf is fine — damper stuck open. Cold air settles on the top shelf first.
- Vegetables in the crisper drawer freeze — the drawer temperature control is set too cold, or the overall fridge temp is too low.
What can you check at home?
- Check the temperature setting — it should read 37°F (3°C). If it's lower, adjust it and wait 24 hours.
- Clear any food blocking the back vents inside the fridge.
- Listen for the compressor — if it runs constantly without cycling off, the thermostat or damper has likely failed.
- Check the damper by feeling for cold airflow at the top of the fridge compartment — if you feel strong cold air even when the compressor is off, the damper is stuck open.
Real repair case: fridge freezing food in Riverside, CA
A homeowner in Riverside contacted us after noticing vegetables icing over and milk partially freezing inside their refrigerator. The freezer was fine — the problem was isolated to the fridge section.
Our technician found the damper control stuck in the fully open position. Cold air from the freezer was flowing into the fridge compartment continuously, with no regulation. The damper motor had failed and the flap was frozen open.
After replacing the damper assembly, the fridge returned to a stable 37°F within a few hours. No more frozen vegetables.
