Whirlpool dryer making a loud screeching noise
A screeching or squealing noise from a Whirlpool dryer is almost always mechanical — a worn rotating component that's developed friction as it spins. The good news: dryer noise diagnosis is straightforward. The location of the sound and when it occurs during the cycle narrows it down to one or two parts in almost every case.
The most common causes of a screeching Whirlpool dryer
Drum rollers — The drum sits on small wheels at the rear of the dryer. As the rubber wears and the bearings dry out, they produce a high-pitched squeal that gets louder as the dryer warms up. This is the most common cause of dryer screeching on Whirlpool models. Rollers are replaced as a kit and the idler pulley is typically replaced at the same time since access requires the same disassembly.
Idler pulley — The idler pulley maintains tension on the drive belt. When its bearing wears out, it produces a squealing or chirping sound from the front-center of the dryer. The sound is usually most pronounced at the start of the cycle before the dryer warms up.
Drive belt — A worn or fraying drive belt can produce a squealing sound as it slips over the motor pulley. If the belt is the cause, the drum may also turn inconsistently or the dryer may stop mid-cycle as the belt slips further.
Drum bearing or glides — The drum is supported at the front by glides or a bearing. When these wear through, metal contacts metal and produces a grinding or scraping sound rather than a squeal. This is less common but more urgent — continued operation accelerates damage to the drum itself.
