Why is my Maytag dryer not heating?
A Maytag dryer that runs but produces no heat is one of the most common appliance problems we fix. The drum spins, the timer counts down, but clothes come out just as wet as they went in. This is almost always caused by one of a handful of specific components — all of which are replaceable.
Why does a Maytag dryer stop heating? 5 causes
1. Blown thermal fuse (most common) — the thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that blows when the dryer overheats. Once blown, it cuts power to the heating circuit permanently. The dryer continues to run and tumble, but produces zero heat. A blown thermal fuse is the single most common cause of a Maytag dryer not heating — and it almost always means the dryer vent is clogged and needs to be cleaned as part of the same repair.
2. Failed heating element (electric dryers) — the heating element is a coiled wire that generates heat inside the dryer. When one section breaks, the element stops producing heat entirely. Unlike the thermal fuse, a failed element is usually a gradual failure — the dryer may have been producing less heat for weeks before stopping completely.
3. Bad gas valve coils (gas dryers) — on Maytag gas dryers, electromagnetic coils open the gas valve during each heating cycle. When the coils fail, the valve won't open and the burner won't ignite. The dryer runs normally but stays cold.
4. Failed cycling thermostat — the cycling thermostat regulates the temperature inside the drum by cycling the heat on and off. When it fails in the open position, the heating circuit stays open and no heat is produced.
5. Clogged dryer vent — a severely clogged vent causes the dryer to overheat, which then blows the thermal fuse (see cause #1). Even if the fuse hasn't blown yet, a blocked vent means the dryer runs at high temperature for extended periods, dramatically shortening the life of the heating element and thermostats.
How to tell if it's the thermal fuse or heating element
- If the dryer produces absolutely zero heat from the moment the cycle starts — thermal fuse or gas valve coils (gas dryers)
- If the dryer was gradually producing less heat over time before stopping — heating element or cycling thermostat
- If the dryer overheated or shut itself off before this started — definitely the thermal fuse, and the vent needs to be cleaned
Real repair case: Maytag dryer not heating in Ontario, CA
A homeowner in Ontario called us after their Maytag electric dryer stopped producing heat. The drum was spinning and the timer was running, but after a full cycle clothes were completely wet.
Our technician Oleg arrived the same day. Testing with a multimeter confirmed the thermal fuse had blown. Inspection of the dryer vent revealed a heavy lint blockage — the dryer had been overheating for weeks before the fuse finally failed.
Oleg replaced the thermal fuse and cleaned the entire vent run from the machine to the exterior cap. A test cycle confirmed the dryer was reaching normal operating temperature. He also recommended the homeowner check the vent every 6–12 months to prevent recurrence.
How much does Maytag dryer heating repair cost?
A thermal fuse replacement typically costs $100–$160 including parts and labor. A heating element replacement runs $150–$250. Gas valve coil replacement on a gas dryer is $130–$200. All of these are well worth doing on a Maytag dryer — Maytag appliances are built to last and parts are widely available.
