Why is my washer leaking from the bottom?
A washing machine that leaks from the bottom is a problem you shouldn't ignore. Even a small puddle after each cycle can damage your flooring and cause mold under the machine within weeks. The good news: most washer leaks are caused by a small number of components and are fixed in a single visit.
Why does a washer leak from the bottom? 5 causes
1. Clogged or cracked drain pump (most common) — the drain pump is at the bottom of the machine. When its housing cracks or the seal around it deteriorates, water leaks during the drain/spin cycle. You'll notice the leak happens specifically during the spin phase rather than the wash phase.
2. Worn or damaged door seal (front-load washers) — the rubber bellows seal around the door opening is a common failure point on front-load washers. When it tears or the clamp loosens, water seeps past the seal and runs down to the bottom of the machine. Look for dark spots or water stains on the door seal itself.
3. Loose or cracked hose connections — washers have multiple internal hoses connecting the drum, pump, and inlet valve. Any of these can crack or have their clamps loosen over time. The leak location shifts depending on which cycle is running.
4. Detergent overdose or wrong detergent — using too much detergent or regular dish soap in a washing machine creates excess suds that overflow through the door seal or pump housing. If you notice a soapy puddle, this is likely the cause — switch to HE (high-efficiency) detergent and use the recommended amount.
5. Water inlet valve failure — the inlet valve controls water entering the machine. If the valve body cracks or the connection fitting loosens, water leaks continuously even when the machine isn't running. A leak that appears without the washer being in use almost always points to the inlet valve.
How to identify where the leak is coming from
- Leak during wash cycle — door seal, inlet valve, or drum hose
- Leak during drain/spin — drain pump housing or drain hose connection
- Leak when machine is off — inlet valve not fully closing
- Soapy puddle — detergent overflow, switch to HE detergent
- Leak at front of machine — door seal on front-load, or overflow on top-load
Real repair case: washer leaking from the bottom in Riverside, CA
A homeowner in Riverside noticed water pooling under their front-load washer after every cycle. Our technician Dennis arrived the same day and ran the machine through a complete cycle while watching for the source of the leak.
He found a cracked drain pump housing — a hairline crack that was releasing water under pressure during the spin cycle. The crack was not visible without running the machine, which is why the homeowner hadn't been able to find it themselves.
Dennis replaced the drain pump assembly and checked all hose connections. A full test cycle confirmed no further leaking. Total repair time: under 90 minutes.
Can you keep using a washing machine that's leaking?
We strongly recommend against it. Water from a washing machine leak can get under flooring, warp subfloor panels, and cause mold inside walls if the machine is against an exterior wall. Each additional wash cycle expands the damage. If you've noticed a leak, stop using the machine and call for service.
